This Blog is closed. Due to massive SPAM(See here for SPAM) .

From Wikipedia:
"The term spam is derived from the Monty Python SPAM sketch (see video in External Links), set in a cafe where nearly every item on the menu includes SPAM luncheon meat. As the server recites the SPAM-filled menu, a chorus of Viking patrons drowns out all conversations with a song repeating "SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, SPAM... lovely SPAM, wonderful SPAM," hence "SPAMming" the dialogue. The excessive amount of SPAM mentioned in the sketch is a reference to British rationing during World War II. SPAM was one of the few foods that was widely available.

Hi all,

As some of you may have noticed, comments are 99% SPAM. So as I planned for some time to change the blogEngine, (again), I am currently working to setup a wordpress blog.

I will integrate the Linux on X60 Thinkpad blog into my Personal Blog. So don't be scared,... I am trying to setup things clearly, so everyone will quickly get to his desired stuff, may this be the Linux or personal Stuff.

PS: I will update both blogs for another 2 month. As I don't plan to integrate the old messages in the new Blog, I will keep this blog online, for some time.

For questions, or if maybe you are scared to loose your favourite blog...just send me an email...

Received Wrong BAttery Replacement Unit

After waiting about 4 months to get a Replacement Unit for my defectous Battery, I was really happy to get a package on Friday.

But, interestingly, the new Unit did not look the same as my old Battery did(Photos will come soon). At first I said, well those bustards, sent me a 8-cell Battery for my 4-cell BAttery.

I thought, well after all IBM Customer Service isn't that bad. But then I tried to mount the new Unit, and THIS WAS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE.

So, waiting till today to calm down, I wrote an Email to IBM CS: Which goes like this:

"""
Hello,

I have made a request to get a new Battery, as mine is defectous(BAttery
Recall from October 2006).

Last Friday on 19th of January 2006(after almost 4 month of waiting!!) I
received the new Battery. I was really happy to get it after such a long
waiting time.

But then I realized that the Battery model I received, did not at all
match mine. And does even fit to my x60 Thinkpad. So shortly I CANNOT
use the received Battery.

My question is now first, how can I return the wrong Battery model to
IBM, and second, when does the replacement then arrive(Do I have to wait
another 4 months)?

Just to repeat, I received the following number from IBM Customer
Service when I announced for the BAttery Recall:

Number

I will give you my BAttery Information, maybe someone got a number
wrong:

(The number goes here)

(maybe 0(zero) is the letter O)Impossible to distinguish

The code of the wrong replacement unit I received friday:

(The number goes here)

And by the way, you got my Address all wrong:
It is not:

But my Address is:

I am very interested on how you plan to solve my case. Just let me know,
how i should proceed now.

Thank you

So Again If any of you have experienced similar cases or heard of such cases, please write me by email or simply post a comment(between all spam message)

Happy new Year & Waiting for the Battery

Happy new Year to all of you...

Making the review of the year 2006, I noticed that I still haven't received my new Battery of Lenovo/IBM. So first they announced a delivery time of 4-6 weeks. Then changed it to 8 weeks. But now it makes more then 3 month. The first entry of the battery recall, when I called the hotline was from the 2nd October 2006.

I assure you that up to now my opinion on Lenovo/IBM customer service is still more then positive, but starting from now is decreasing dramatically. Apple and Dell replaced battery units, quite fast(what I heard from friends and found on the net).

If only Dell you have bought the Thinkpad series???? Dell excellent customer service, but crappy computers.

IBM/Lenovo excellent computers, customer service... well we will see.

By the way, i guess Lenovo/IBM is blaming Sony(as manufacturer of the damaged battery units), and finally Sony has to pay a large sum to Lenovo/IBM for damaging their image,...blablabla.

If this would ever happen, I would suggest IBM/Lenovo to spend this money to all their customers, who had to wait 3 and more months to get replaced units.I guess this would give them credit again.

If any of you out there, has the same problems or can report that it is not the case please write me an email or give comments.

Strange entries in xorg.conf

I had some strange entries in my xorg.conf file about some WACOM stylus devices. I never ever used such a thing, so I removed them, uncommented them. Bu then, X did not restart. So what have I done wrong???

I looked and found some entries in the ServerLayout, referring to them. So if you have such strange entries I recommend to remove them(or uncomment).

My xorg.conf file looks now as follows:

Edgy Eft NetworkManager with VPN support

As I often us the VPNC to connect to the university VPN, I used the network Manager to do this for me. However, this did not quite work out of the box in Edgy.

Now I found a .deb file, which works great for vpnc support in NetworkManager. You can get the file here http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=271869

Just download the network-manager-vpnc_cvs20060914-1_i386.deb.bz2 file and right-click the file on your desktop(After download).

Then choose to open with "GDebi Package Installer" and simply select INSTALL.

Voila, logout-login and with left -click on NetworkManager-applet you can manage your VPN-connections.

VmWare Guest OS(Windows XP) Clock is running too fast

Today I noticed that the clock of the Windows XP OS inside the Vmware runs too fast. So I googled, because I was sure to find some hints to solve this problem.

And I found the following info:

If the clock of the Vmware guest OS is running too fast, look for the file /etc/vmware/config

Add the following three lines to that file:

host.cpukHz = 1830000
hostinfo.noTSC = TRUE
tools.syncTime = TRUE

Edgy Eft adding Multimedia Support

As Easyubuntu does still not officially support Edgy Eft, you can use it anyway. I installed the codecs manually, and I post here which codecs I installed:

sudo aptitude install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-gl gstreamer0.10-plugins-base \
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse \
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse libxine-extracodecs w32codecs

And then for the totem-firefox plugin just do:

sudo aptitude install totem-gstreamer-firefox-plugin

For the rest(flash, java) I used easyubuntu to test it for Edgy. There is a simple way to use it in Edgy, as found on ubuntuguide.org):

wget http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/files/easyubuntu-3.023.tar.gz
tar -zxf easyubuntu-3.023.tar.gz
cd easyubuntu
cp packagelist-dapper.pot packagelist-edgy.pot
cp packagelist-dapper.xml packagelist-edgy.xml
sudo python easyubuntu.in

And yes it worked for me.

Finally I installed the latest Flash Player 9 for Linux as described in a past post in this blog.

And now I have a fully Multimedia Ubuntu Edgy Eft :)
